Centipedes are usually considered nuisances rather than
destructive pest. Centipedes pose an occasional threat to man because they are
equipped with poison glands and they will bite. The poison usually produces only
a moderate reaction similar to that of a bee sting, but if you are bitten and
have a significant reaction, don’t hesitate to see your physician. They prefer
moist, protected habitats such as under stones, rotten logs, leaves, back or in
compost piles.
Millipedes are not poisonous, but many species have
repugnatorial glands capable of producing mild acids, which may produce
allergenic reactions in sensitive individuals. Millipedes feed primarily on
decaying organic matter, and rarely do they attack roots and leaves of seeding
plants.
