Fleas are found worldwide. There are an estimated 1600 species. The most common fleas encountered in Florida are probably Cat Fleas. Others, such as dog fleas, human fleas, oriental rat fleas and numerous other rodent fleas are encountered only occasionally by the homeowner. Female flea in the family-way lay eggs shortly after a blood meal.
Because fleas have the ability to survive for many months without food, they can remain in suitable areas for long periods of time waiting for dinner, which usually is your cat, your dog, or you. Occasionally eggs are laid while the female flea is on the host, but the eggs normally fall off.
This is how homes become infested. Cat and dog fleas may also be found on humans, rabbit, squirrels, rats and birds. Human fleas also attack swine, goats, cats, dogs, rats, coyotes and skunks. Like one big happy family!
